Coming soonIznik tiles take their name from the city of İznik in northwestern Turkey, where ceramic production flourished under Ottoman imperial patronage from the 15th century onwards. At their peak, from 1550 to 1700, Iznik workshops supplied the great mosques and palaces of Istanbul: Topkapı Palace, the Süleymaniye, the Blue Mosque.
The tiles are made from a quartz-rich white clay body, hand-painted with metal-oxide pigments before a transparent glaze is applied and the piece re-fired. This underglaze technique locks colour permanently beneath the surface. A luminosity no modern printing method replicates.
Signature elements: cobalt blue, turquoise, sage green, and the "tomato red" unique to Iznik ware, achieved through a raised slip technique. Motifs include the tulip, carnation, saz leaf, arabesque, and geometric star. The Tree of Life panel is among the most iconic compositions in all of Islamic decorative art.
Tiles Souk sources authenticated, hand-made Iznik tilework directly from master craftsmen in İznik and Istanbul, importing to South Africa for mosques, private residences, and collector commissions. As we grow, we will bring the full breadth of the Islamic tile world to South Africa , one tradition at a time.
